A Day In The Life Join us behind the scenes at Kurt Geiger HQ

Join us behind the scenes at Kurt Geiger HQ in our ‘Day in the life’ series as we meet the teams behind the brand. This week we catch up with Fanny Goldsmith, Designer for Accessories as she talks through her role at Kurt Geiger and what it’s like to see a design come to life.

What’s the favourite thing about being a designer? “For me one of the best things is simply creating something that wasn't there before. I am never happier than when I am making something, be it with a needle and thread, a pen and paper or ribbon and raffia. Putting simple individual elements together to create a beautiful, functional and all together new object is highly satisfying and exciting.”

Who inspires you? “If I were to pick a designer it would have to be Nicolas Ghesquiere, the creative director of Louis Vuitton, formally of Balenciaga. He just never ceases to amaze me. Everything he creates is brilliant in the way it challenges the viewer and he always strays just enough from the norm to create a look that is wonderful and new. Also, my Mother! She is one of the most creative women I have ever met.”

What advice would you give to other aspiring designers? “Develop your own vision and understand what you like and don't like. You will often have to compromise with others; which can be a positive challenge, but it is important to understand yourself and what you want to create.”

What was the inspiration behind the collection? “For me, the Kurt Geiger London customer is the great inspiration. Understanding what she needs on a day to day basis, while working to offer her something aspirational with a luxury feel, is an exciting challenge. I want to give her sophisticated day to day options that she can bring to work - like this seasons update to the London Tote in all over croc embossed leather or the new Bea Tote with two zipper compartments and just the right amount hardware.”

“It is also important to offer her exciting and new fashion pieces so she can stand out from the crowd. For instance, the Charlie cross body with its bespoke hardware and chain strap detail or the Charlie rucksack available in fur, shearling, and croc print leather are both great alternatives to a classic tote with a more urban feel.”

What trends is the collection channelling? “This season is all about the glamour of the 70’s. A strong empowered femininity, vintage Vogue covers, wide brimmed fedora hats, deep vibrant jewel tones mixed with camel and tan, glossy finishes on croc embossed leathers, touches of fur, and a splash of metallic sequins for evening.”

Which is the best bit about seeing a style come from paper to life? “There is nothing like walking down the street and seeing a stranger carrying a bag you started as a scribble on a piece of paper. It makes me proud and all the hard work seems worthwhile. My boyfriend always tells me to go and tell people I designed their bag, but I’m too shy to do that!”

We are loving the colour block bags how would you advise customers to style this? “Don’t be afraid to use this as an everyday bag with lots of looks! Flared jeans and a t-shirt with seasonal retro platforms or perhaps head to toe black for a real accessory statement. Colour blocking works as a modern update to retro patchwork that will outlive any 70’s trend.”

What are the key colours for the season? “A palette of deep rich hues offset by bright jewel tones is key; like in our new Kate bag – deep burgundy saffiano next to ruby red croc or navy saffiano next to bright sapphire croc. The most exciting colour for me is the emerald green! Used all over in the Beatrice tote it makes a top pick for the season.”
