There are always plenty of scary trends on the catwalks, and this season is no different. Crop tops, transparent dresses and the colour yellow come top of the SS17 tricky-to-wear list (we know, sorry - don’t blame us!), but the trend we can really get on board for its chic wearability and look-at-me factor is volume.
Volume comes in many shapes and sizes this summer - huge statement sleeves, oversized coats and sack dresses to name but three - but the one we’re most interested in is wide leg trousers, be it mega long bell bottoms or calf length culottes. There are SO MANY reasons to invest in a wide leg…
They make your legs look longer
They are a cool nod to the Seventies
They are eternally chic
They are a brilliant excuse to buy a new pair of killer heels
And what’s not to love about all that?
The key to wearing wide leg trousers successfully is balance. For starters, your top half needs to be on the slim-fitted side, so a skinny cashmere sweater or tailored shirt will be perfect. And let’s be honest, unless you’re blessed with height, the only footwear option is a great pair of heels; only the very tall can master that laid-back look of flares and flats. Steer clear of the obvious block heels and platforms as they can look a little bit like you’re off to a disco-themed fancy dress party and instead, opt for a spiky heel for a fresh feel.
Nude and camel If you’re going for camel coloured trousers, team them with nude courts and a top in a similar shade. Top-to-toe tonal looks are big news this season.
Show off boots When your boots look this good, don’t hide them under your trousers; instead go for culottes that are cropped just above the top of your boots to show a flash of skin.
Ideal with denim Jeans are getting the volume make-over this summer too, and we love nothing better with indigo blue than a pop of cherry red.
