While they regularly pull off jeans, blazers, and Bretons with aplomb, Sarah Ellis and Philippa Bloom know a thing or two about occasion dressing too. A fashion journalist and stylist respectively, together they form best friend blogging duo We Are Twinset. From the shoes you need for New Year’s Eve to their failsafe evening outfit formula, they reveal how to nail party season style…
First up, how would you describe your party season style?
Monochrome dressing with killer heels & nude lips - works every time! For us it’s all about the accessories, give us a great heel and a sleek clutch and we’re as happy as can be.
What would be in your party season capsule wardrobe?
A velvet blazer; a lace trim cami; a pair of black culottes; tailored trousers, an off-the-shoulder top; a pointy heel – in red and black - and two clutches; classic black and metallic. With these, we can mix and match to our heart's content!
What are your go-to party season accessories this year?
Say hello to the 'Alabaster' heel, could we want anything else in a shoe?! Those teamed with a mini Kensington is the perfect party combo.
And how will you be styling them?
It’s all about that failsafe formula where we let our accessories do the talking. A slinky cami and ripped jeans for that dressed down vibe and for something more luxe, an off the shoulder blouse & flowing culottes.
Heels or flats?
Flats for every day (we’ve got to be comfy when we’re rushing around!) and heels for a night out.
Clutch or cross body bag?
Clutches all the way! Inside it’s all about the essentials…keys, phone, a nude lippy & gum. Boots are now a totally acceptable evening option – what are your tips for styling them for after-dark? Stick to black as they are the most versatile & the higher the heel the better. Wear with frayed hem jeans or a slim trouser for that sleek look.
What are the key party season trends for AW17?
We’ve got lace, shimmer, sparkle, velvet, red…there’s something out there for everyone. How can you work the requisite party season sparkle into your look without looking like a Christmas tree fairy?
We’re not big into sparkle so the best way to do it is with one simple piece. Maybe a sparkly cami or a blazer with a little sparkle in the lapel. Or alternatively a statement glitzy clutch or heel. The main rule is that if you’re going for some sparkle and keep the rest of the look simple - let the glitz take centre stage.
What would you wear…
To the office Christmas party?
When we go out after work it’s all about updating our daytime looks with a heel. For the Christmas party, we’d add the Kurt Geiger London 'Ellen' to our outfit.
For a festive lunch with friends?
Kitten heels are that perfect go-between when we want to feel a little ‘done’ but not too much. Kurt Geiger London’s 'Pia' is a cool way to luxe up denim and knits for the day without looking too OTT.
On New Year’s Eve?
If there’s one day of the year to really go for it, it’s NYE so we’d go all out with the Carvela Kurt Geiger 'Alison' glitter courts.
Any tips on what to wear when you’re unsure of the dress code?
We always prefer to feel more underdressed than overdressed, so for us that usually means our favourite jeans, a blazer, slinky tee and some kind of heel. We often go for a pop of red with our shoes or bag to give those wardrobe staples a lift.
Which party beauty looks will you be trying out this year?
Dark eyes, nude lips & shimmery cheeks. We love playing with make up as much as we do clothes & shoes!
What’s your party tipple?
A gin & tonic for Philippa & a vodka, soda & lime for Sarah… the simpler the better!
